Battery reliability is a constant concern for South African motorcyclists, whether it’s a commuter bike left standing during load shedding, a weekend toy parked between rides, or an adventure machine stored between long trips, that scooter at your holiday house or even your jet ski or boat or beach buggy. Oxford’s latest Oximiser Pro battery management systems, now available locally through DMD, aim to address these realities with intelligent charging solutions designed for real world use.
The Oximiser Pro range consists of three models, the Pro 900, Pro 1250, and Pro 5000, each offering different charge outputs to suit everything from small capacity commuter bikes to larger touring and adventure motorcycles.
The entry level Pro 900 is aimed squarely at everyday motorcycles and scooters. With a 0.8-amp output, it’s best suited to maintaining batteries rather than rapid charging. It uses a 7 stage automatic charging process to safely charge and then maintain batteries without overcharging. Its IP65 weatherproof rating makes it suitable for garage or outdoor use, a useful feature given South Africa’s varied climates. This unit supports 6V and 12V lead acid batteries, making it ideal for smaller bikes, older models as well as those holiday toys at your vacation house.
Stepping up, the Pro 1250 offers broader compatibility and more flexibility. With 1.3 amps and an 8-stage charge cycle, it supports AGM, GEL and LiFePO₄ (lithium) batteries, which are becoming increasingly common on modern motorcycles. The inclusion of a desulphation mode is particularly relevant for bikes that spend long periods standing, helping to recover batteries affected by sulphation. This model suits most mid capacity motorcycles and dual sport machines.
The flagship Pro 5000 is designed for larger batteries and higher demand applications. Delivering 5 amps, it can charge and maintain batteries from roughly 20Ah up to 120Ah, making it suitable for big adventure bikes, tourers and workshop use. Like the 1250, it supports lead acid and lithium battery types and features an IP65 rated housing for durability.
Why It Matters
With rising battery replacement costs, a reliable battery optimiser is becoming essential equipment for South African riders. The Oxford Oximiser Pro range offers scalable options depending on bike size, battery type and usage, providing a practical solution for keeping motorcycles ready to ride year round.
