The annual SAMRA NSF100 Camp, held each December and run by Neil Harran at Redstar Raceway, once again proved to be a roaring success.
Thirty-five young, enthusiastic riders between the ages of 5 and 14 took part in a fun-filled three-day camp at Redstar Raceway in Delmas. The camp was open to all children – from those who could already confidently master both track and bike, to youngsters who had never ridden a motorcycle before.
This long-running camp has played a vital role in South African motorcycle racing development, with many of the country’s top youth racing athletes working through the programme over the years.
The initiative began when Honda Motors Southern Africa, in partnership with SAMRA, set out to introduce South African youth to the joy of motorcycle circuit racing at grass roots level. Purpose-built race bikes for children form the foundation of the programme, while instilling discipline, respect, courage, tenacity, confidence and, above all, a love for circuit racing.
SAMRA, a non-profit organisation was formed in 2009, with its primary focus on the development and transformation of motorcycle circuit racing in South Africa. The academy is also affiliated with Motorsport South Africa (MSA).
This year’s camp offered the kids a great experience from the moment they arrived. Registration took place on Sunday, 7 December, where participants had the opportunity to mingle with fellow motorcycle enthusiasts – make new friends and reconnecting with familiar faces. Once sleeping arrangements were sorted, the excitement was palpable throughout the hall, with friendship-building high on the agenda.
The action began early the next morning, 6:30am sharp. Riders assembled for physical training on the track, where they were welcomed by the coaching team who would guide them throughout their SAMRA Camp journey. The coaches included Ryan van Nieuwkerk, Chris Wright, Leungo Gaorekwe, Cayden Robert, Mitch Mortimer, Robert Jonck and Savannah Woodward.
Hands-On and in the trenches… Brad Binder on track giving instruction…
Adding to the excitement was a surprise visit from Brad Binder – 2016 Moto3 World Champion and multiple MotoGP race winner – who arrived to greet the young riders. His presence sparked an eruption of excitement and inspiration among the kids. He is a seriously cool guy! How often do you get a current MotoGP hero as a coach?
Participants were divided into groups based on their skill levels. Beginners spent time on the dyno and roundabout, learning fundamental riding skills on a motorcycle attached to a fixed arm that moves in a circle, allowing them to become comfortable with throttle, balance and control. More experienced riders took to Redstar’s short circuit, while another group honed their skills on the skid pan, practising cone work and bike control.
Together with the coaches, Brad Binder demonstrated correct racing lines and techniques, with the kids eagerly following. On the skid pan, riders were taught how to properly position their bodies – even learning how to get a knee down. Despite the inevitable spills and tumbles, the resilience of these young riders shone through. Each time, they picked themselves up, dusted themselves off and carried on, supported by Brad and the ever-present coaching team who offered guidance, encouragement and motivation.
On Wednesday, 10 December, the camp drew to a close with each rider receiving a certificate of completion and competence, proudly signed by Brad Binder himself. Selected riders were further recognised with trophies for their outstanding achievements.
Although visibly tired after three action-packed days, the youngsters were brimming with excitement, already talking enthusiastically about the next camp.
For any youngsters wanting to experience the thrill of circuit racing, the SAMRA NSF100 Red Star Rookies is a great place to start. Lifetime memories are created, skills are developed and dreams are ignited over the course of just a few short days.
