Last Sunday morning, (the 12th of October 2025), was one of those moody Gauteng spring mornings, low clouds, damp roads, and that faint drizzle that makes your visor mist up just enough to be annoying. Not exactly the kind of weather you want when you’re trying to pull off a big charity ride.
By the time we rolled into the dealership’s parking lot just after 7am, there were already a few brave souls braving the elements, sipping coffee, laughing about the weather, and doing what we do best, talking nonsense and admiring each other’s machines.
The plan was simple, R120 entry, plus a food or blanket donation for the Harties Animal Welfare Society, and in return you got a solid breakfast at Redstar Raceway and a few laps on the circuit. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday we reckon.
By 7:30, bikes started trickling in – Harleys, GSs, ZX10s, Hayabusas, even a couple of old-school boneys. Despite the grey skies, the vibe built quickly. The guys and girls from Bikeshop Boksburg kept things smooth, supplied a great coffee, biscuit and muffins station, organised donation boxes, guided arrivals, and made sure that everyone felt part of something good.
By 8am the parking lot was filling up nicely. By 9 we were easily 120 bikes strong. More importantly, those donation boxes were overflowing with the kindness of the biking community. The generosity was incredible. You could tell everyone was there not just for the ride, but for the cause.
When the time came, Disco Don from The Bike Show gathered everyone for a quick pre-ride briefing, thanked everyone for their support, and then, just like that, more than a hundred engines fired up. The sound echoed down Rietfontein Road like a rolling thunderstorm.
Our route took us out along Rietfontein, then onto Rondebult, and eventually the N12 East toward Delmas. The convoy split naturally into smaller groups, each riding their own pace. Traffic was patient, most drivers giving us space and a few friendly waves.
About 5 kilometres from Redstar we hit a light drizzle again, but no one seemed to care as we rolled into The Redstar Raceway.
The Square looked like a biker festival! Rows of dripping helmets, steaming coffee cups, and hundreds of cold, hungry riders queuing for breakfast. The kitchen staff did their best, but it’s not every day that they get invaded by so many caffeine starved motorcyclists.
Before the track opened, one of Redstar’s senior instructors and safety marshall for the day, “Doc” Delport gathered everyone around for a quick briefing. Because of the patchy drizzle, the original idea of open sessions was off the table. Instead, all the riders would do a series of controlled parade laps in groups, led and tailed by marshals.
At first a few guys and girls looked disappointed, but honestly, it turned out to be a great call in the end. The track was slick in places, and with such a mix of experience levels, from first timers to seasoned track veterans, this was the safest and smartest way to do it.
And what a blast it was. They might not have been chasing lap times, but carving through those bends on a damp Red Star circuit, surrounded by riders all grinning inside their helmets, was something special to see.
When the helmets finally came off, the smiles said it all. Everyone was buzzing, hugging, laughing, and asking the photographers where to find their pictures (you’ll find their links at the top of this story).
As the pits started to empty and the bikes headed for home, it was a great reminder of what the biking community is all about. No egos, no nonsense, just a bunch of people on two wheels doing something decent for others.
The final tally of donations looked fantastic, and HAWS will definitely be feeling the love from the biking community for a while.
Days like these remind you that the South African biking spirit is alive, generous, and unstoppable, rain or shine.
Here’s to the next one. Ride safe, and keep those hearts as open as your throttles.
