Sunshine, beautiful twisty roads and a pack of rumbling V-Twins rolling through the countryside…. So, this was our Tuesday, how was yours? Stuck behind a desk much? Dealing with difficult clients and/or Bosses? You should’ve Gyppo’d graft hopped on your scoot and joined – we had a good time! Or did a few dark clouds and three spots of rain put you off? Well, check out the pics – we all got a tan – Ya should have bunked and come riding!
We tried something new with this one and…. We liked it. It doesn’t mean this is going to be our new format, we’re just adding different stuff for different riders. We have another Gyppo Tuesday Ride coming up very shortly and will be doing it in our tried and tested Adventure ride format, check out those details here.
We all started rolling into Harley Davidson Mzansi from about 12H00 and were greeted with fresh coffee, ice cold soft drinks and scrumptious light snacks. There was much joviality as we hooked up with old mates we hadn’t seen in years, made new mates and shot the breeze while waiting for the stragglers to roll in all the while eyeing the dimming skies with mild suspicion. Three or four raindrops barely dulled the shine on any of the glistening paint and chrome and at around one-ish, with stretching stomachs and much anticipation, we rolled out into the Fourways traffic which is always manic no matter the time or day and headed for the hills. A rolling pack of thundering V-Twins was enough to open the traffic up like the Red Sea before Moses and we were soon cranking into the twisties unhindered in short order.
Our route took us out through Chartwell to that fancy new interchange that replaces the old ‘Lion Park’ four way stop. The lekker left sweep as you cross the freeway was attacked with gusto before turning right to pass Lanseria’s ‘International’ airport. Harley Davidson Mzansi loaned us a whole bunch of demos for the ride, so we often stopped to play musical chairs with the bikes. For some of the riders this was their first experience astride a Harley or any American Iron for that matter and many new fans were won for that genre of motorcycle…. clever plan HD Mzansi, well done and thank you for the loan of the bikes.
We carried on down past The Home of The Chicken Pie to the T-Junction at Broederstroom where we hit a left past the roadworks before the next left onto the Satellite Road. Here we could really stretch our respective steeds legs a bit…. Apparently a bit too much… Even with another stop or two to swap bikes we still got to the next T-Junction way ahead of schedule. So, instead of turning left to The Cradle we hooked a right down the Hekpoort pass before another left towards Magaliesberg…. where we could really let our bikes gasp in full chunks of air.
A quick stop in Magaliesburg for fuel, (unplanned – but hey, we did extra clicks rapidly and that does drain a tank quicker than planned), and then it was out the other through the bends and a sho’t left onto another road where we could really get our hustle on to the next T-Junction, basically where we turned right instead of left earlier.
A quick regroup, another round of bike swapping, and it was off to the right towards Krugersdorp and then left at the Sterkfontein Caves into The Cradle and a final burn all the way to Bidon Bistro for another light lunch and some much appreciated ice cold milkshakes, (because we’re tough like that), and a good chin wag.
Bidon Bistro is a firm favourite in this office and we do spend a lot of time there on photo and film shoots during the week. BEEEG things are happening at Bidon Bistro, we were introduced to the new Boss, much prettier than the old Boss. There was much renovating on the go and Marinda tells us there are plans afoot for an even bigger and better venue with accommodation and all sorts of events and lekker stuff.
There was not one grumpy or sad face at the table, just pure exhilaration of being able to ride some of the best biking roads on our doorstep without having to dodge traffic, just clear winding roads, great machinery and excellent scenery rounded off with a lekker chow down at one of our favourite venues. Then it was more bike swapping before we put the setting sun at our backs and headed for home with riders peeling off with hooted and waved greetings.
The rest of us dropped off the demos back at Harley Davidson Mzansi, hopped back on our own boneys and aimed for home.
