Triumph 765 MOTO2

Triumph Daytona 765 Moto2

Number 726 of 765…

This is actually the second time that we’ve had the opportunity to ride the Triumph 765 MOTO2 Edition. We have no idea where the first story went, but – here comes a lot of gushing about a motorcycle that really is, quite special.

The Triumph Daytona Moto2 765 is quite something.

Top drawer Triumph technology.

A limited-edition, track-focused supersport motorcycle inspired by the Moto2 championship

It uses the Street Triple RS motor as a starting point, but that gets new titanium inlet valves, high compression pistons, DLC-coated gudgeon pins, wilder cams, new intake trumpets, trick conrods, slicker intake ports,  a different crank and barrels  and it pushed around 128hp.

That’s all wrapped up in an aluminium frame and acres of gorgeous carbon fibre.

It boasts high-performance components like fully adjustable Öhlins suspension and Brembo Stylema brakes.

Rider aids include a quickshifter, five riding modes, ABS, and traction control and that’s all displayed and controlled on a full-colour TFT display.

Did we mention gorgeous? Well just look at it!

Climb aboard and you are ensconced is what is, unashamedly a race position. High pegs, low bars – it’s a racer with lights. It’s not as squashed or extreme as many of its supersport or superbike rivals but riding for extended periods reminds this rider that he is not quite as flexible as he once was. It’s just waiting to be unleashed on the track. Tickle the starter and that unique 765 growls to life. The clutch is silky smooth, snick her down into first and go hunting for the corners…

This bike feels and sounds just like the 675, but the motor’s extra capacity delivers significantly more oomph… without being crazy. This is one of the lightest, easiest bikes that we’ve experienced.

It’s just so calm and balanced in slower traffic conditions with  perfect fueling whether you’re in Road, Rain, Sport, Track, or the customizable Rider mode. There’s no need to nail it to get going like some of the 600 odd cc screamers on the market, but we bet that you will anyway – and we guarantee that your neighbours will bitch like hell… unless they understand.

Pin the throttle and you absolutely know all about it as that Arrow pipe screams through that slick gearbox..

Magnificent! The Pirelli Supercorsa tyres are a great choice of rubber for any superbike, the quickshifter is perfect, she turns better than we can and the Ohlins suspension… well, it’s Ohlins, so, while firm it does exactly as it is supposed to, even on some of the less well maintained surfaces we rode.

The 765 is more than just a Daytona 675R with a bigger engine.

It screams unique, from the striped and numbered wheels, carbon fairing, plush single seat, front mudguard and hugger, to its machined and numbered aluminium yoke and custom colour TFT, complete with a Moto2 start-up logo. It has unique switchgear, riding modes, electronic rider aids and a gorgeous titanium Arrow end-can.

This is a real example of British engineering and yes, it was built in Hinkley, the world’s Triumph headquarters.

If you ever get the opportunity, go and ride one.

You’ll feel like a GP racer every time.

765 of these were built for the USA and Canada. A further 765 of them were made for the rest of the world.
