Streetbikes. What to get your kid when he, or she gets her learners licence? Scooters are really practical, but they lack that certain “Cool” factor. The one that makes the pretty girls look twice? Well this one will do the job.

It’s flippen cool with angular lines, muted colours, LED lighting and carbon fibre detailing – even a USB charging plug built into the dash.

Everyone who saw it complimented it. Hell! We didn’t have bikes this good looking when we were kiddo’s. Ok… There was a Cagiva Mito and an Aprilia RS125… but that’s another story.

We were able to keep this bike for a week. Our junior member of the family has a licence for a 125, so he swapped out his scooter and used it to school and back. Then,  we gave it to Bryan, a customer of ours for his commute from the East Rand to Sandton and back and got his opinion and, naturally we used it as the company runabout to the shops and dealerships in our area.

Our junior member loved it. The long trip to Sandton and back required patience – and to the shops and back was cool fun for our team.

Some details:

We’ve mentioned all the prettys but the important bits are in the brakes, suspension, power and general handling.

Engine:

The four-stroke carbureted single cylinder is mated to a five speed gearbox. It’s peppy enough for around town and on short commutes, but on the longer run, Bryan was begging for more power and a sixth gear. We told him gently that he needs to remember that it’s only a 125…

It comes complete with an electric starter, the clutch is soft and gear changes are smooth

7.5Kw single cylinder engine.

Linked Brakes:

Twin pot calipers up front do a great job with stopping duties. Out back is a single pot on a big disc. No complaints, the brakes are excellent.

Suspension:

Even with the big galoots on board, the Sym 125 handled hard braking and all that no problem, no bottoming out on the hard bumps and none of our riders had any complaints. The front is non adjustable and out back you can adjust the preload. We all weigh between 75 and 105 and in stock trim the bike felt just fine – so for most young riders starting out the Sym will do the trick.

The ride:

To get to school and back, spot on. As a good looking bike for zooting up and down the back roads to your buddies house or movies and back on the weekend, excellent.

That’s exactly what this bike is designed for.

Longer journeys, rather go for a bigger capacity bike. This one does a top speed of 119KPH flat out (that’s not too bad), but it’s happier at around the 100KPH mark.

“It all feels well put together. Comfortable, no vibration, decent handling. Nice functioning dashboard, very clear and concise. I reckon however, that it is quite badly restricted and would consider an aftermarket exhaust system to make it a bit more peppy.”

That’s the SYM NHX 125.

A great runabout with the backup of a South African giant in KMSA.
