Introducing the BMW R1300RS

BMW Motorrad officially unveiled the 2025 BMW R 1300 RS back in April of 2025,  which does seem to be a big step up from the outgoing R1250RS. It certainly does seem to have the unmistakable DNA of the BMW RS line. We wandered down to BMW Motorrad to go have a look at it.

It would seem that the new R 1300 RS represents a significant evolution over its predecessor, offering sharper styling, improved ergonomics, and enhanced aerodynamics. The fairing design flows into the tank, creating an aggressive silhouette while attempting to maintain aerodynamic efficiency and long distance comfort. Tested in the wind tunnel, the new bodywork  is said to deliver improved wind protection and a higher top speed, which is a claimed 245 km/h apparently, making it the fastest boxer powered BMW to date.

Four distinct model variants are available, the base model in Racing Blue Metallic, Triple Black in Blackstorm Metallic, Performance Variant in Lightwhite Uni and the Option 719 Cuyamaca in Brooklyn Grey Metallic, featuring exclusive milled parts and premium finishes. Each version can be further customised through BMW Motorrad’s accessories and factory fitted options.

At the heart of the R 1300 RS lies a completely re-engineered 1,300 cc boxer twin, producing a claimed 145 hp (107 kW) at 7,750 rpm and 149 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. Despite the significant power increase, BMW claims the engine remains smooth and fuel efficient, achieving a consumption of just 4.8 L/100 km.

This model uses BMW’s ShiftCam technology, which varies valve timing and lift on the intake side for improved torque, efficiency, and throttle response across the rev range. The redesigned gearbox now sits beneath the engine for improved mass centralisation, apparently contributing to sharper handling and a lower centre of gravity.

Riders can choose between three standard riding modes, Rain, Road, and Eco, while the paid for optional Riding Modes Pro, adds Dynamic and Dynamic Pro, as well as configurable pre-sets. The engine drag torque control (MSR) system comes standard, and we are told that is to prevent rear wheel lockup during downshifts, enhancing stability in demanding conditions.

BMW Motorrad’s engineers have developed an all new frame for the R 1300 RS. We are told that it is constructed from high strength sheet steel with a die cast aluminium rear subframe. Claiming the result should be a lighter, stiffer, and more compact chassis that is said to improve stability and agility. The bike’s total weight is claimed at 245 kg road ready, while the redesigned EVO Paralever swingarm is claimed to  improve stiffness and rear end control. At the front, a 47 mm upside down forks are said to deliver precise feedback and superb damping, while new 17 inch cast aluminium wheels shed over 1.4 kg compared to the previous generation.

BMW seems to have fitted their new Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) system, on the R 1300 RS. It’s said to be the world’s first production motorcycle to feature an electronically adjustable spring rate in the telescopic fork, automatically adapting damping, stiffness, and load compensation in real time for maximum comfort and performance. Riders can also pay for the sport suspension, exclusive to the Performance model, which raises ride height and enhances cornering clearance.

BMW appears to have focussed on safety and control with the R 1300 RS. The standard BMW Integral ABS Pro system is claimed to deliver confident braking, even while leaned over, which can be complemented by paid for optional sport brakes for enhanced performance.

BMW claims their latest Riding Assistant suite brings automotive grade tech to the sport touring segment. It includes Active Cruise Control (ACC), Front Collision Warning (FCW), Rear-End Collision Warning (RECW), and Lane Change Warning (SWW). Standard Dynamic Cruise Control (DCC) with braking is said to ensure smooth, safe speed management, while optional Headlight Pro introduces an adaptive cornering light, another first for the RS range. A new automated shift assistant (ASA) is also available, providing clutch free shifting and optional fully automatic gear changes.

We are told that the R 1300 RS stays true to its touring heritage. Ergonomics have been revised for a sportier, more forward-biased riding position. Adjustable footrests, a range of seat options, and optional comfort handlebars allow riders to tailor fitment.

BMW’s new electrified luggage system includes 26 L and 29 L side cases and a 39 L top case, all integrated with the bike’s central locking system, featuring interior lighting and USB C charging ports. The new strapless tank bag, secured via a magnetic tank ring, expands from 5 L to 8 L and completes the touring package.

The 6.5-inch TFT colour display with BMW Motorrad Connectivity provides navigation, media, and call integration via Bluetooth. Riders can access turn by turn navigation through the BMW Motorrad Connected App, with additional support for ConnectedRide Navigator and ConnectedRide Cradle devices.Heated grips and a paid for optional seat heating for both rider and passenger add cold weather comfort, while dual power sockets, 12 V and USB-C, keep devices charged on the go.

And that is pretty much all we know, BMW Motorrad has secured a demo unit for customers to ride, so wander down there with your bike licence and ask them for a ride.
