BMW Motorrad Montana is one of SA’s favourite BMW Motorcycle retailers in South Africa. We wanted to know why, so on one of our rounds, we popped in to have a looksee.
Our favourite German globe-trotter, Peter Schluter, happened to be in town for the Roof of Africa and joined us for the visit.
Pulling into the massive commercial estate owned by Legacy Motor Group, you’re met with a pretty striking sight. Front and centre, right at the entrance of the property, sits a seriously impressive building that leaves no doubt about who occupies it.
Step inside, and it somehow gets even bigger. The showroom is packed wall to wall with more BMW motorcycles than most of us have seen under one roof. Peter, who spends most of his life travelling the world covering various racing series, stopped dead in his tracks. His exact words: “Not even in my home country of Germany have I seen such a thing like this. So many motorcycles in one dealership is very much not normal.”
He isn’t wrong.
Running the sales side of things is Motorrad Sales Manager Riaan Schickering, a man with many years of experience in the motorcycle industry, most of it within the BMW Motorrad network. His team, Rouan Kotze, Johan Calitz, Mbulelo Ngxonono and Desmond Roodt, are all well known faces in the riding community and really know their way around the BMW range..
When they say they have stock… they mean stock. At least eight or so R1300GS Adventures stand together in one corner alone. Nearby are rows of RTs, S1000RRs, a handful of M1000RRs along with a healthy spread of R series bikes, GS models in every flavour, XR variations, and more.
If it’s a current BMW Motorrad model, chances are good it’s standing on that floor. They’re open to trade ins and buy ins, which explains how they keep such a broad mix on hand.
Head upstairs and you’ll find a very well stocked riding gear department. Boots, jackets, suits, casual wear and rain gear for the rather moody weather Pretoria has been serving lately. Helmets, gloves, and just about everything else you can bolt onto yourself before a ride.
From the balcony, you get a proper top-down view of the showroom. Impressive.
The dealership also has two rather lekker customer waiting areas with solid coffee and refreshments, a well organised parts department, and a clean, professional workshop. Everything is laid out neatly and run with the kind of order you’d expect from a top performing Motorrad dealership.
What stands out most, though, is how accessible the place feels despite the scale. Big dealership, big footprint, big stock, but relaxed, easygoing people who clearly know their craft.
The shop is conveniently positioned just off the N1 Polokwane freeway at Sefako Makgatho Drive (formerly Zambezi). If you’re anywhere near the area, you shouldn’t really miss it.
Whether you’re in the market for a new bike, hunting for riding gear, or just keen to browse and talk shop over a good cup of coffee, BMW Motorrad Montana is definitely worth a stop. Even Peter, who’s seen more dealerships than most of us ever will, walked out impressed.
