This event was started three years ago by RideFast, The Bike Show and RAD KTM, who hosted a night ride around the ring road of Johannesburg.

Last year, RAD KTM moved next door to Bikeshop Rivonia, there was even more collaboration between the two shops and the media and the numbers grew to 160 motorcycles.

This year, it grew even bigger. Much bigger.

On the last Sunday of May — the last day before the chill of winter officially set in — 361 motorcycles filled the parking lots of Bikeshop Rivonia, RAD KTM and pretty much every other business in that centre. The entry fee was a single blanket, which was added to a hill of blankets that quickly grew into a mountain.

It wasn’t just the riders who donated. The good people at World Sports Betting put forward 150 blankets, while sizeable donations were also made by Honda SA, Trans Bus Africa and the good guys from Bike Kings accessory stores.

In the end, the mountain tallied more than 600 blankets. These were handed over to the Rotary Club of Brits-Hartbeespoort, which has already found homes for them in needy areas, underprivileged schools and animal welfare charities.

The ride itself covered 140 km of some of the best roads in the Gauteng area, including the Cradle, Magaliesburg, Hekpoort Pass, Satellite Road and the R512. It ended at Maggie’s Farm — better known as “The Home of the Chicken Pie” — where everyone relaxed with a good pie and some well-earned banter.

Next year, it should be even better.
